A Cosmetic Dentist in Delaware Can Improve the Health of Your Gums

Doubtlessly a cosmetic dentist in Delaware is the one person who can give you the most dynamic and beautiful smile you can get. With our focus squarely on giving you the whitest and straightest teeth you can have, we have honed a number of procedures to give you just that. As there is an increased awareness about the importance of appearance, more people are educating themselves as to what a cosmetic dentist actually does. Some of the most common procedures that we do, our daily staples as it were, have become household names. Today, everybody knows that if you need whiter teeth you can get them with teeth whitening. If your teeth are crooked or misaligned, a cosmetic dentist can straighten them with Invisalign® or braces. If you have damaged teeth that are broken, cracked, or chipped we can use dental veneers or dental crowns to fix and cover the damage. All of these procedures also have an application that goes beyond just the cosmetic, as they also impact how well your teeth function.

Two other procedures that we perform, as a cosmetic dentist, have more to do with the gums and are tied to medical conditions as well as to the aesthetics. These are gum contouring and gingivectomies. As a cosmetic dentist in Delaware, we perform a procedure known as a gingivectomy, and it has a medical impact while also influencing how your gums look. Mostly this procedure is done for patients who suffer from gum diseases like periodontitis. When you have periodontitis, your gums become separated from your teeth. This creates deep pockets underneath the gums. From an aesthetic perspective, this is extremely unattractive. These pockets are also the perfect breeding ground for all kinds of bacterial infections that need to be removed. Plaque builds up in these pockets since they are essentially impossible to clean with conventional methods. When you come into our dentist office, we will prepare you for the surgery by injecting the gums, around the site, with local anesthesia. Once the gums are sufficiently numb, we will remove the excess loose gum tissue that is causing the pockets to appear. Since we are also concerned with aesthetics, we will mold and reshape the gum tissue while in the process of performing the gingivectomy. After the process is complete, we will place putty over the gums, to give them a chance to heal properly without a risk of infection. A successful procedure will result in your gums returning to their normal, healthy, pink condition.

Another procedure that we perform very successfully, also having to do with the gums, is a gum contouring. Sometimes a patient finds that their gums are too short, meaning that they do not provide enough coverage for the teeth. This can also happen as a result of gum recession. In other cases, the gums are too low on the teeth, giving you a gummy smile. A simple, in-house, procedure can be done to contour your gums, lengthening or shortening them to the appropriate length.  As a cosmetic dentist in Delaware, we can perform these and other procedures to improve the appearance and health of your gums.
