As a dentist in Delaware, it is
important that we take the time to get to know our patients and explain what modern dentistry involves. Many
people think of the dentist, and the old Hollywood image comes to mind with teeth pulling and crazy tools.
This is far from the reality of modern dental care. We use the latest technology to help our patients to
feel their very best. We also take the time to explain these procedures in detail and answer questions.
During exams, we are asked many of the same questions and as such, have provided you with the following
information.
How is cosmetic dentistry and my health related?
As a cosmetic dentist, we help our patients to stay in good oral health by preventing things like cavities and gum
disease. If they occur or a tooth becomes damaged, we have the skills to treat the tooth and correct the
problem in a way that looks natural and beautiful. This is an advantage for patients because when a cavity
develops it can be treated, and a silver amalgam filling used to restore the tooth structure. However, as a
cosmetic dentist we can use a tooth-colored filling instead. This will blend in with the natural tooth.
In this way, cosmetic dentistry makes it possible for the same procedures to be performed but teeth to look
better once they are finished.
Will my tooth need to be pulled?
When you visit a dentist in Delaware, your tooth will typically be restored rather than pulled.
It is better for your jawbone if the natural tooth remains in place because without a root; the jawbone can
start to change shape and even become weaker. With this in mind, we have multiple ways to restore a tooth that
include dental veneers and dental crowns. If a tooth is cracked, for example, we typically do not need to pull
it but can place a dental crown around it so that nothing touches the natural tooth and it is as durable as a real
one would be. Simultaneously, infected teeth may also be saved using a root canal procedure. This is a
common procedure where the infected area can be removed while leaving the rest of the tooth in place.
What is dental anxiety?
Dental anxiety is any fear, anxiety, or stress associated with dental care or visiting the dentist. At Sexton Dental, we understand that dental anxiety can manifest due to a variety of reasons, from unpleasant experiences with a dentist when you were younger to a fear of certain dental tools. However, avoiding the dentist can lead to delaying essential dental treatment, which can result in poor oral health and the need for more extensive procedures in the future. Our team is here to make you feel safe and comfortable when you visit our office and will work with you to find the best way to administer the dental care you need and deserve.
How long will my crown last?
When patients get a dental crown, they typically expect it to last forever. This is not necessarily the case.
The better job you do of taking care of your teeth, the healthier and stronger they will be and the more
stable your crown will be. If, however, your teeth get consistent infections, your crown will be put at risk.
Some people have worn a crown for twenty years while others keep it for five. With this in mind, take
good care of your teeth and visit a dentist in Delaware.
