Veneers are one of the staple procedures used in cosmetic dentistry today. These oral restorations are ultra-thin shells that are cemented on the front surfaces of teeth to cover flaws that show when the person smiles. Veneers are the fastest way to restore the appearance of a person's tooth as the process can be completed in as little as two weeks.
Veneers are used to fix dental problems like:
- Stained and discolored teeth
- Deformed teeth
- Short teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Chipped teeth
- Gaps between teeth
How cosmetic dentistry uses veneers to close gaps
Veneers cannot be used to close large gaps between teeth, but they work effectively on small gaps. These gaps are closed by placing oversized veneers on the two teeth closest to the gap. This creates the appearance of there being no gap and it is a great solution for people who have gaps in the front portion of their mouths. Other cosmetic dentistry treatments used to address gaps include:
- Dental crowns
- Composite bonding
- Clear aligners
- Braces
How veneers are installed
The installation of veneers requires the removal of small portions of tooth enamel. This is a permanent procedure that cannot be reversed so the dentist will educate the patient about it. Removing enamel means the tooth will always need a restoration to protect it from irritants in the mouth, like acids.
The dentist will talk to the patient about their habits to determine whether any of them can damage or stain the veneers. For example, smoking can stain veneers made from composite.
Once the patient has been cleared for veneers, the dentist will prepare their teeth by removing small pieces of enamel. The removal of enamel creates room for the veneers so it does not make the patient's teeth appear bulkier.
The dentist will take digital images or take an impression of the patient's teeth and pass the information to a dental lab where the veneers are made. It usually takes a couple of weeks to get the customized veneers back to the dentist. The patient gets temporary veneers to protect their teeth while their restorations are being made.
Once the patient's customized veneers are ready, the dentist takes off the temporary veneers and cements the customized veneers into place. Adjustments are made as needed before sending the patient off on their way.
Porcelain veneers are the most likely to be used by a cosmetic dentist since they provide the best aesthetics. Porcelain is also resistant to stains so it is easier to keep these restorations looking pearly white. Porcelain veneers can last over a decade with good dental hygiene.
The bottom line
As you can see from the above, veneers are not the only option when it comes to closing gaps. Composite bonding is the most affordable option, but it only lasts a few years. Clear aligners and braces can be used to close even large gaps, but treatment times take up to a year on average. It an option that is often recommended for patients who have other orthodontic issues in addition to the gap between their teeth.
